Pharmaceutical Pollution & Antibiotic Restistance in Pakistan's Drinking Water
by Usaidullah Virk

Pharmaceutical pollution is a growing public health concern in Pakistan. Large amounts of untreated wastewater allow pharmaceutical waste to enter water systems, including antibiotics that can contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Over time, exposure to these antibiotics can allow resistant bacteria to develop and spread. This is especially concerning for low-income and rural communities where access to safe drinking water is already limited. This presentation reviews existing research on pharmaceutical pollution in Pakistan and its connection to antibiotic resistance. It also examines why current efforts have struggled to address the problem. Proposed interventions focus on improving community education and strengthening regulation while creating safer and more effective systems for water treatment and monitoring. Addressing pharmaceutical pollution can help protect Pakistan’s drinking water while reducing the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.
